One of my old Bombardiers went inactive and applied for the Victoria Police, and despite his age and prior history of drug use was accepted. He had quite a bit to offer given his experience. Medically discharged you get a whole heap of entitlements to transition into civilian jobs. There are also quite a lot of avenues for training for non medical discharge members too. There is a scheme called CTAS, Career Transition Assistance Scheme (or something along those lines) through your transition cell. Go and see them and ask for all the information regarding avenues of training and entitlements for your time of service...each year equates to something. You'll have some entitlement to career training, make sure you go to the next transition seminar in your area. You have to book it, so make sure you have seen the transition cell to get all the relevant information. Your heirachy are required to let you take the time off to attend. They usually are run over a 2 or 3 day period. I know that there have been quite a few ADF members who have successfully applied for tickets in mining (and it doesnt really matter about your previous experience or what corp you are in), and are now earning mega bucks up in Queensland, and here in Perth. (Perth is better money apparently). Tranciv are a good link for ex defence employees transitioning into civilian life...they have recently made contact with the mining industry and are have educated them through their contacts about the skills ADF members have acquired during their service. They primarily deal with ex defence members, and all have been members themselves, so know exactly where you are coming from, and how to transfer your skills from the military to civilian terms..they have done an awesome job with my husband.
