There are lots of potential hurdles for children in work, many of them legislative, moms and dads need to be careful about that. There is lots of help from the resource in the box below on this issue, they also have help for all people who are searching for work, or who need to change careers. Prince

This is one of those very rough and hard to deal with age related questions. This can be a real pain in the ass. Check this out:
You can join the army and be told to go and kill another person (foreign or domestic), BUT…..
You can not smoke
You can not drink
You can not sign a contract
You can not operate machinery
That list is by no means complete and neither is the next one. I am a physician, not an HR representative.
No drinking—> no bar tending
No smoking–>no working at a corner store
Not able to operate machinery—> no construction, factory, lawn service, auto service or forklift jobs
No contracts—>no sales (auto, real estate)
Best advice: You can try a local grocery store (wal-mart will not hire you, too young), bowling ally, movie theatre, book store.
For whatever you do through out your life, the very first thing I would recommend is that you open a Roth IRA account, put money in and NEVER touch it until you retire.
From an old MD to a young person, may the wind always be at your back. Michael

Insurance regulations stipulate age 18 in many health care enviroments. However, you could be employed in a non-patient care position in a hospital or nursing home (laundry, housekeeping, maintenance, office) until you turn 18.
Also, one of the growing careers in the medical field is Pharmacy Tech. You can take an online course at age 17 and take the state exam when you turn 18. Many of these positions are great jobs and pay $3.00 to $5.00 more per hour. You might consider.
Otherwise, I wish you well. As I often recall, it is a bummer being 17! dmartin2214
