How do I start a career in Journalism?

I would like to start a career in Journalism. The thing is, I have ten years of experience in the IT field, and a degree in Biology and one in Economics. Will this make it difficult for me? Should I look into going to graduate school, or look for an undergraduate certificate program? What schools would you recommend in California?

i don’t know any schools in california but you should get yourself enrolled into the journalism course as available in the communications diploma/degree… you need this basic background to have a good journalism career.

You can start it by travelling or start making stories that will interest other people…

I would recommend delivering papers, then delivering papers to the paper deliverers, then be a manager, then onto becoming a printer, then editor, then ( do you see a pattern here?) on & on up the ladder until you reach your goal. Some jobs or careers are done way better if you start at the bottom & work your way up (cliche, I know) but you will certainly know every aspect, and get respect from co-workers.

I may not be able to answer your question very directly, but I can give you some encouraging news… I’m a journalism student myself. It is a great asset that you have such a broad base of knowledge to draw from. All the advice I’ve ever gotten has been to become an expert in something and learn to write about it. It’s exactly what you need to set you apart from the crowd. You may need some formal training in journalism, so you can understand things like style and journalism law and ethics. If I were you, I would decide what kind of journalism you would like to do, and then find a writer who does the same thing and contact them for advice. They will likely be happy to help you.
